The Wisconsin Honey Producers Association recognizes the importance of educating the public about the importance and value of our industry. We utilize various resources to accomplish this goal depending on the venue.
Our most visible outlet is the Wisconsin Honey Queen program. The queen does school presentations, presentations to civic groups, media interviews, and attends fairs and farmer markets across the state promoting the industry.
Another very visible outlet is the Wisconsin State Fair. The observation hive draws much attention and is a great place for us to talk to the public about our industry. The Wisconsin Honey Queen also does a daily presentation for fair goers promoting the uses of honey in cooking.
WHPA sponsors an annual poster contest for elementary students. Each year the theme is a different aspect of the industry. The contest draws entries from around the state and judging is based on the message presented as well as the artistic quality.
Since the mid 1990’s WHPA has sponsored the Kids and Bees Exposition in conjunction with our annual state convention. Over the years through this program we have been able to provide thousands of children around the state the opportunity to learn about the importance of bees and beekeeping.
Although not a state wide initiative at this time, various groups affiliated with WHPA offer mentorship opportunities to help young people get started in beekeeping. These mentorships provide assistance with the initial investment of getting started and advice and support from experienced beekeepers. Please contact the local WHPA District chairperson to find a beekeeping mentorship program in your area.
